Lucinda Nelson
PhD Candidate and Senior Research Assistant

About
I am a PhD candidate at the Queensland University of Technology, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, and the QUT Digital Media Research Centre under the supervision of Prof Nicolas Suzor and Dr Tegan Cohen. I have also benefitted from the supervision of Dr Ariadna Matamoros-Fernández and Dr Rosalie Gillett at earlier stages of my degree. I hold a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Justice (Distinction) from the Queensland University of Technology.
My doctoral research explores everyday forms of online misogyny on social media platforms, with a particular focus on the negotiation of belief in discourses about domestic violence. Through a rich, qualitative analysis of content about the Depp v Heard trial on Twitter, I aim to understand the cumulative harms of less extreme expressions of misogyny, and how content moderation might better address them.
I am deeply passionate about the elimination of violence against women, and strongly believe in the value of interdisciplinary research in this space.
